Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
4 “And you know the way where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me

We were all babies once!

When I read this verse in Jeremiah I was in awe. This verse opened my eyes to our Father's deep love for all his children not just when they pop out but when they are tiny. It also meant that we cannot forget that the beginning of life is happening in a mother's womb and that at each step of its 'knitting' it's precious.
In Psalm 139 13-14 The Psalmist reminds us that each baby is wonderfully made.

What do scientists make of those amazing verses? According to Dr. Alfred M. Bongiovanni, professor of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania, 'human life begins at the time of conception. I submit that human life is present throughout this entire sequence from conception to adulthood and that any interruption at any point throughout this time constitutes a termination of human life.”

Speaking of the early stages of a child’s development in the womb, Professor Bongiovanni says, “I am no more prepared to say that these early stages represent an incomplete human being than I would be to say that the child prior to the dramatic effects of puberty is not a human being. This is human life at every stage.”

Also Dr. Jerome LeJeune, genetics professor at the University of Descartes in Paris, states, “after fertilization has taken place a new human being has come into being.” He says this “is no longer a matter of taste or opinion. Each individual has a very neat beginning, at conception.

Professor Micheline Matthews-Roth of Harvard University Medical School argues, “It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception.”

To conclude, I share these verses found in the Book of Job, ch 10 v 8:12 when Job is in utter adversity and rightly worried about his future!

“Your hands shaped me and made me.
Will you now turn and destroy me?
Remember that you molded me like clay.
Will you now turn me to dust again?
10
Did you not pour me out like milk
    and curdle me like cheese,
11
clothe me with skin and flesh
and knit me together with bones and sinews?
12
You gave me life and showed me kindness,
and in your providence watched over my spirit.

UK gene editing: taking place soon!

The following information is very disturbing! Is this really going to happen!

A British ethics committee has greenlighted the use of human embryos for genetic research.

Dr Kathy Niakan of London’s Francis Crick Institute was given permission by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority earlier this year to edit single genes, despite international criticism. Christian Concern’s Chief Executive, Andrea Williams, said at the time that the move had crossed a "dangerous ethical line".

The Cambridge Central Research Ethics Committee, the relevant regulator in this case, has now given Dr Niakan the go-ahead, making the UK the first country to approve gene editing and only the second to attempt it. China previously experimented on embryos but this was not approved by a regulator.

Single gene editing

The new technique, known as Crispr-Cas9 (CRISPR), is thought to be able to edit single genes, by making the 'faulty' gene inactive or replacing it with a healthy copy. This would alter the DNA of an embryo.

Experiments, which will begin later this year, would take place on the human embryo within the first seven days of its life, and afterwards it would be destroyed. The embryos will be donated by women who have some left over, after undergoing IVF treatment.

The practice has not only been criticised for destroying human life, but there are also concerns about both the technique’s unknown consequences and the potential to create ‘designer babies’.

Dr David King, director of the Human Genetics Alert organisation, said earlier this year: "This is the first step in a well-mapped-out process which is leading to GM babies, and a future of consumer eugenics."

'Misleading'

Scientists claim that CRISPR will be able to discover the reason for failed IVF and miscarriages.

"We would really like to understand the genes that are needed for an embryo to develop into a healthy baby," Dr Niakan claimed.

"Miscarriage and infertility are extremely common but they are not very well understood. We believe that this research could improve our understanding of the very earliest stages of human life."

"If we were to understand the genes, it could really help us improve infertility treatment and provide crucial insights into the causes of miscarriage."

Yet experts have warned that this claim is misleading. Earlier this year, Dr Peter Saunders of Christian Medical Fellowship said:

"The fact is that we already have quite a good understanding of what causes IVF failure and miscarriage and it has very little to do with anything that can fixed by Crispr-Cas9.

"Only abnormalities in single genes can be readily fixed with gene editing of the sort that the Crick Institute is proposing. Gene editing tools like Crispr-Cas9 do not fix chromosomal abnormalities".

Pushing boundaries

Dr Trevor Stammers, Programme Director in Bioethics and Medical Law at St Mary's University, has also spoken about the many concerns surrounding gene editing and its approval in the UK.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 in February, he outlined the moral problems with the destruction of human embryos and the dangers of introducing even restricted experimentation.

By gradually removing restrictions surrounding the technique, he explained, the practice will be "unstoppable", as scientists push to break further scientific boundaries.

'Ploughing ahead heedlessly'

Commenting on the Cambridge Research Ethics Committee’s approval of gene editing, Christian Concern’s Chief Executive, Andrea Williams, said:

"It is disappointing that an ethics committee should greenlight this kind of experimentation. The number of ethical considerations involved in gene editing has led many nations to warn against its use, yet here in the UK, scientists are ploughing ahead heedlessly. An ethics committee should aim to safeguard human lives at every stage, not condone their destruction for the purpose of experimentation."

Christian Time Management - Life, Hope & Truth

Image result for time management by God

What God wants us to learn from time management

God wants us to become His children—to be like Him (Hebrews 2:10; 1 John 3:1-3)!

To become more like God, we need to learn to have His priorities. We need to learn to use those priorities to produce a plan for improving our lives and aligning them to God’s plan. And we need to put those plans into action. God’s priorities and plans always produce results, and so can ours.
Priorities

God reveals to us what is truly most important in life. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

The Kingdom of God is the perfect government of God that will bring peace and plenty to this earth when Jesus Christ returns. We must be preparing for that time now. Seeking God’s righteousness means striving to live the right way—obeying God’s beneficial laws that are based on God’s love. (Study more about these priorities in our article “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God.”)

The end of Matthew 6:33 reveals an amazing thing about God’s priorities. If we put what God says is important first, the other things we need and want will be added to us as well!

Solomon's wisdom

Nicola Poussin, the judgment of Solomon

When life throws ordeals and hurts at you, you wish that you had Solomon's wisdom, a great gift given to him by the Lord. A friend told me some time ago that we could ask for this gift of wisdom too along with a sound mind. Tonight we went to our deanery service at St Peters Rickerscote. It was lovely to meet up with our friends.Easter at S. Peter’s 1

We prayed for the leaders and the people of Ukraine and Syria, for our people in England who do not have enough money to feed their children, for the staff in Stafford hospital still being in the media. If you choose to believe in Jesus, you have life, eternal life. As the song goes, Jesus is our rock, He doesn't roll. During your journey here on earth, put all your problems, debts, job loss, broken hearts, lies, deception, friends betrayal, stress, arguments, illnesses, at the foot of His cross. The other day, I was told that Jesus on the cross was 'a scary picture'..true, but how beautiful and wonderful that Jesus, our hero, died for you, for us, for everybody who declare He is the King, God's son died for our sins and the Good News is that He is risen. Alleluia! Have a blessed week.

Solomon’s Wisdom 1 King 4:29-34

29 God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. 30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. 33 He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 34 From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.

Lifestyle

I need to change some of my bad habits..yes I am using the plural. One being procrastination, this one needs a miracle, - prayers please - it's a big mountain and I haven't quite chipped at it yet.
The second one is ' going to bed too late'. Last week, I managed to go to bed at 9:30 pm on Thursday and I was really pleased. I confess that this was due to an intolerable sense of fatigue that meant that I just couldn't open my eyes hence I had to go to bed!
On Friday, we were out but managed to come back fairly early and I went to be at about 11 pm. I knew that I had to get up to meet my friend at Cannock at 9:00 am and did not want to be late.
Last night I went out with a friend and though I was back home at 11, I ended up going to be after midnight. Worse, I woke up at 4 am and I could only go back to sleep at 6 am. As it is 19 36 now, I meant to post something and I can hardly keep my eyes open. I'm off for a nap. These habits are only the tip of the iceberg..others include eating before diner...etc...
Have a blessed evening. N.

Have a blessed New Year 2014

At times I wished I'd kept a diary. We’ve been so busy that I struggle to remember what we’ve done since the school holidays started. I could do what I ask my form, a delightful year 8 class, about their week-end, give me two or three key-words. Once, Will raised his hand and said: x-box, x-box and x-box. He had everyone in stitches!
So, here are my three key-words, Praise, parties, family!
Praise the Lord for Jesus, the Saviour of all those who believe in Him and invite Him in their life, midnight service with friends and family,
parties, even carolling at the pub classifies as a big party, two wine and nibble parties, once after carolling in the street of Stowe, the other as a customary invite at our dear friends Jenny and Mike, I was also invited to watch a superb play in Nottingham, the 101 Dalmatians with my friends Sue and Phil, today was the ruby anniversary of our dear friends Sheila and Roy, tomorrow, another party, my hubby’s 21 x 3 birthday celebration!
family special time shopping in town for presents, having a gingerbread latte in Starbucks, opening presents and dining, watching some tv..
Finally, last nite, my dear hubby took me dining in our favorite restaurant in Stone, an italian place. Later on, we celebrated the end of 2013 with our dear friends, over champagne and pudding. Happy New Year and may the Lord bless you in abundance.

A B C D E F G

One day, a little girl got lost in the woods on a farm near where she lived.
The farmer who owned the land found the little girl and said to her, "Don't be afraid; I'll take you home."
The little child looked up at him, and with a smile, said, "I'm not afraid. I knew you would come; I was waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?" said the man. "What made you think I was coming?"
"I was praying that you would." she said.  "You were praying?" the farmer asked. "When I first heard you, you were just saying 'A B C D E F G.' What was that for?"
She looked up again and said, "I wasn't sure exactly what to say, so I was praying all the letters of the alphabet and letting God put them together the way He wanted them. He knew I was lost and he knew how to put the letters together better than I do."

I love this story so much. 'letting God put them together the way He wanted them' implies a complete trust in God. Are we ready to step out in faith or to ask in faith in our daily walk? Then we need to be patient and wait in faith for the Lord!
The followers of Jesus said to him one day, "Give us more faith." Jesus answered them, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you." I find this passage of the bible very encouraging. Also the thought that not only our God loves us but he knows us and he is patient with us so even if we miss the mark and dare not step out in faith in one situation, we can have another try and this time go for it. Hence the importance of being surrounded by faithful brothers and sisters who truly love the Lord.
May the Lord make his face shine on you.

Messy church rocks!

This afternoon, Steven and I went to messy church in Weston. We met up with Phil, the rector, Gill, the messy church team leader and the other members of the team.Once again, the village hall was full of children and parents. On the play list was my favourite song : Who is the king of me? J.E.S.U.S. The kids loved it!
We gave thanks to the Lord for all the good things that He provides us with. The most popular activity was the following, you had to design bracelets or necklaces with food bits, such as grapes, candy floss, sweets, cheerios and  strawberry strings. Have you done messy church before, it's a lot of organisation but good fun!

Fix your eyes upon Jesus

Hebrews 11:29-12:2

Introduction

The passage we are looking at today from Hebrews continues the theme of faith that the author takes into a new gear at the beginning of chapter 11 and his introduction to this is:

[2] This is what the ancients were commended for.

He then mentions a host of people as well as events through which greats acts of faith and hope are demonstrated from creation onto a host of important events in the first half of the Old Testament and then he glosses the rest and brings us to a time possible only years before the coming of Jesus. This is a catalogue of heroes of faith, people who had faith in a living God who acts, gives hope and who has more in store! In fact at the other end of chapter 11 he brings an interesting turning point which is pivotal to what follows:

[39] These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, [40] since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

In fact the whole chapter is like a marathon, hold that, which starts with a very steady and measured pace and then accelerates from where we cut into it today.

Another thought on 'faith' and for that, back to the first verse of chapter 11

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

As part of the introduction to this passage one of my commentaries says this:

In a world where people dismiss faith as ‘wishful thinking’, or simply identify it with the beliefs and practices of a particular religion ( e.g. ‘the Muslim faith’), it is good to have a comprehensive picture of the faith that actually pleases God. Hebrews shows the link between faith, hope, obedience and endurance, illustrating that it is more than intellectual assent to certain beliefs. God-honouring faith takes God at his word and lives expectantly and obediently in the present, waiting for him to fulfill his promises. Such faith brings suffering and persecution in various forms.

Chapter 12 brings in his readers, and us, with complete prominence into the arena and also there is the ultimate hero of all who is also at the centre of the whole letter - Jesus. So, as I say,

Into the arena

Which is just the picture we have. Remember I said before that chapter 11 is like a marathon, well, most of a marathon is run outside the arena, certainly at the Olympics and probably in those days too, well, now we are there with Jesus in what is the final part of the event. And, this is what he writes:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

Can you see the masterful picture he is painting? All the people of chapter 11 have completed their leg of the marathon, which is also perhaps a relay where faith is the baton passed on, and by what we see in them  we are cheered on our way by the encouragement we see in the way they exercised faith.

In a slightly different way I saw this a few weeks ago at Hixon school sports day and it was a lovely sight. Each group had their great long race round the course, and the younger the group the more their little legs were whirling, but in each year there were always a few who struggled or who couldn't even really run. The truly lovely bit was that those who had finished were there at the finishing line cheering those who were struggling so they completed the race.

Our writer also brings in two other important elements as an illustration for the race of faith in this verse and another
 1.       Ridding ourselves of anything that would hinder - compare that to what Jesus says about the seeds sown in the thorny part of the field in the parable of the sower how they are choked by the cares of this life - consider: what chokes our faith
2.       Ridding ourselves of the sin that entangles - in other words all that dishonours Jesus or is not what he has for us or is against what he wants. The aim is to stay focussed on what we are through the victory of Jesus over sin and death.

All this then makes us lean, mean, running machines and as such there is

The focus of the race

Which is none other than Jesus who he is the starting line, the pace setter and the finishing post - v 2a

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, [2] fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

He is the source of faith, the reason for faith and the goal of faith and this faith is lived out in the realities of life.

This was also true for all those who he mentions in chapter 11 but their faith was much more on that which is unseen than ours  because Jesus has now been revealed. Of course we still have that which is unseen but it is all there in Jesus in whom and through who we live the life of faith.

How He has become the focus of the race

Because as a participant with us this is what he did - v 2b

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Joy was his focus as he, in faith, saw the outcome that is reality for him now which is to be seated at the right hand of the throne of God where he, seated there in victory, is the focus for our journey of faith. That has a conclusion in the next verse which wasn't in the reading - but we'll have it anyway and it will lead to our:

Conclusion

[3] Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Jesus is the ultimate encouragement for us to stay firm in faith. Not other Christians, the church or whatever but Jesus the victor who brings life and salvation - our hope where faith lies.

And finally an anomaly thought: I meet many people who say they are open minded about faith and God but I wonder if lots of those people actually have an extractor fan fitted to their open minds that takes away anything God sows there! You can compare that once more with the parable of the sower and the seed that falls by the path and which is eaten by the birds.

Fix your eyes upon Jesus!

Happy birthday Imogen!

Dearest Imogen,
Congratulations on your 18th birthday
with lots of love.
You really are a daughter
Who fills our home with cheer.
And you grow more beautiful
Each year.
We hope you'll always know
That we love you and we're proud of you.
At times you drive us crazy
It's like living in a zoo
But we really do love you.

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord makes his face shine upon you and be gracious to you:
The Lord turn his face toward you.
and give you peace
Numbers 6:24-26

Bring the fattened marrows
and cut them.
Let's have a feast and
celebrate.

I adapted Luke 15:23 because Imogen has been a vegetarian for five years. On her card, I wrote, the fattened cucumber however, Steven pointed out that marrow do grow bigger!
Last night, we went out for a meal at Pasta di Piazza in Stone even though her birthday was today because she'd planned to spend the evening in Liverpool with 8 of her friends. We had a lovely time, the food and the service were excellent!
This morning, our 'baby' made some 'american' vegan pancakes with oats for herself and the same for us with an egg and 'normal' milk, not this soya stuff (lol) though I'm wondering if soya milk is a good idea but that's another story!
After Liverpool, she will keep on the celebration at Bristol with Camille, her older sister (23) who is so pleased to spend the Bank Holiday with her round!

Imogen, Sadie, Abbie, Shanice, Beth, Tian and Molly
Girls, have a blessed day full of fun and may your friendship blossom.

Good afternoon to all of you blogger friends and visitors. Yesterday, we came back from our holidays, in la Côte d'Azur. The temperature was in the 30s C. and as I am writing it's pouring down - near Stafford in England. The trip was easy on the way there but on the way back was not smooth, for instance when we turned up at our 'usual' campsite in Calais, the camping municipal, right by the docks,  it was closed and you cannot search for campsites in our sat nav. One French man who saw us stuck in front of the shut gate of the deserted campsite due to be demolished soon kindly told us that there was another campsite in the Bleriot plage not too far away. However, another French mobilehome pulled in and as the campsites were appearing on their sat nav we followed them for a while but this lead us to a wild goose search and time was ticking. In the end I asked again another couple parked in front of a doctor surgery and they reiterated that there was another campsite this time giving us more exact directions. So we found it and it was quieter that the one we were used to.  The lady at the reception told us that we could not pay by card (!) so we told her we'd go and find some cash. It suited us as we wanted to get some shopping in the nearby Auchan and find a restaurant for a bite to eat. When we came back two hours later the reception was closed! It never crossed our minds to ask her if they'd closed as all the campsites we've been are opened till 10 p.m. We left the money,  20 Euros in her letterbox.
Another tale: we weren't allowed to leave the campsite before 7 am, our ferry left at 7:45 and we worked out that we'd have plenty of time to board. The following morning, we got up at 6:15, hurried to put stuff away, the electric, the bed...and left at 7 am, we arrived at the car ferry place at 7:20 only to see massive queues formed at the English customs, never seen before. Usually, the custom officer would look at the passports and have a quick check on his computer, that would take no more than 2, 3 minutes, for each car in front of us, they were taking a minimum of 5-7 minutes. When eventually we arrived at our boarding booth, we were told our boat was full and put in the 8:45 crossing. I asked what'd happened at the customs and somehow it was a bit of 'rivalry' between the English and French custom officers, but I wonder if they were after something more serious. As we crossed the channel not only the temperature had dropped but the traffic was dense and I am so glad that I was not driving!
We are so grateful to the Lord that we managed to have a holiday this year - as with what happened at the vicarage earlier in June, nothing was certain - and this holiday was great..more to come.
Peace be with you. Yours in Christ Nicky
PS..I will accept any translation for the title..hey hey!
